SMALL CHOOKS - Cross-bred bantams are my first choice for small sized home poultry.
They can better survive predators since they are able to fly away quickly and to high places.
Bantams reproduce readily. They make excellent broodies also useful for hatching eggs of other breeds that may not 'go clucky' as often.
Bantams' smaller size means they are not likely to accidentally break eggs in the nest as larger fowl. The smaller size is not as damaging to gardens where chooks are allowed free range.
Bantam smaller eggs are often useful especially for children or small portion recipes, about 3 bantam eggs = 2 large eggs.
Most bantams make good pets especially for children or for novice keepers.
LARGE CHOOKS - I love the Barred Plymouth Rocks and have written many reasons why on their own page of this site.
A major advantage to breeders is the ability to colour sex Large Dark Barred Plymouth Rocks - possibly the only 'pure' breed of poultry that can be sexed as day olds. (Please let me know if any others).
